Classification Criteria Working Group
Challenges in establishing classification criteria for IIM:
- One of the main challenges in developing classification criteria for IIM is the complex and varied clinical presentations of this heterogeneous disease. Subtypes of IIM often share symptoms with other autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, which can lead to misclassification and inconsistent diagnoses.
- Achieving global consensus on reliable classification criteria remains a key challenge.
Aims of the Classification Criteria Working Group:
- Continuously Refine and Update Criteria:
Regularly re-evaluate and update classification criteria to incorporate the latest knowledge about disease pathophysiology, including advancements in molecular biomarkers, genetics, and clinical features. This will ensure the criteria remain current and reflective of the evolving understanding of IIM. - Integrate Subtypes into Clinical Trials:
Develop strategies for effectively incorporating IIM subtypes into clinical trials and related research. Tailoring trial designs to specific subtypes will help ensure that new treatments address the distinct needs and characteristics of each subset. - Promote Global Adoption of Classification Criteria:
Work to encourage the use of internationally accepted classification criteria in clinical trials and research studies worldwide. Facilitate their application across diverse populations to ensure consistency and comparability of results.
